Welcome to our Cheese box 64 – August 24!
Welcome to Mangawhai Road Corner Paddock
Gee we love finding new cheesemakers. Mangawahi is near Wellsford in Northland of course, where there is plenty of sun, rain and green grass. There are also plenty of buffalos too now that Mangahwai Road Corner Paddock Dairy is up and running.
Damian Stephen and the team have been developing the herd for a few years now, and they produce rich, creamy A2 milk. They’ve been working on their range and already sell milk, yoghurt and two cheeses, with more to come.
They also run a shop selling their products plus fruits and vegetables, so make sure you pop in next time you’re heading north for a holiday. In the meantime, we’re bringing their outstanding Halloumi directly to your door. It’s amazingly light and crispy.
Enjoy discovering this new artisan cheese maker!
CHILLI PARMESAN – FROM GERALDINE CHEESE
We had never tried a chili parmesan before, and it’s no surprise that this is produced by the ever-innovative Geraldine Cheese. It’s great grated over pasta, and goes well with a Prosecco, Peroni, or dry limonata.
Region: Canterbury. Type of milk: cow.
HALLOUMI – FROM MANGAWHAI CORNER ROAD PADDOCK
This ‘Halloumi Grilling cheese’ is one of the best we have come across, it’s superb. It’s tempting to eat it all for brunch (we did) but it would make an excellent addition to any salad. Try a rose, a witbier, or a blood orange juice.
Region: Northland. Type of milk: buffalo.
PENNISULA BLUE – FROM BARRYS BAY CHEESE
This is a very smooth and creamy blue that is usually aged for at least three months, which explains the element of sharpness. It goes well with a Riesling, a Doppelbock, or a blackberry mocktail, and a handful of walnuts.
Region: Canterbury. Type of milk: cow.
PINK AND WHITE TERRACES – FROM ORIGIN EARTH
It’s been a while since we’ve featured this fabulous cheese. The rind comes from a white and a pink mould, hence the name, and the paste is gooey and pungent. Match it with a Lambrusco, an amber ale or a feijoa kombucha, and, yep, just smear it on some bread.
Region: Hawkes Bay. Type of milk: cow.
