NZ Cheese Box May23

Welcome to our Cheese box 48 – May 23!

NZ artisan cheeses at their best! This month we welcome Clevedon Buffalo Cheese!

It’s a thrill when we welcome a new cheesemaker into the Cheese Wheel movement. Clevedon are an example of a New Zealand artisan cheesemaker working hard to get their cheeses to a wider audience. We’re also thrilled to enable you to be the first to enjoy their brand new cheese, a Spiced Orange Marinated Buffalo Cheese.  If it sounds a bit out there, that’s because it is!

MARINATED BUFFALO CHEESE – FROM CLEVEDON BUFFALO

Marinated cheeses are often a favourite. Done well, they ensure it’s all about the cheese, but with added interest so they are not just a medium for the added flavours. Keep it simple by smearing on some artisan bread, and enjoy it with a Prosecco, a lager or a non-alcoholic spritzer.

Region: Auckland. Type of milk: buffalo.

WAIHI BLUE – FROM GERALDINE CHEESE

Paul Fitzgerald, the owner and cheesemaker at Geraldine Cheese, is one of NZ’s master cheesemakers. He’s been a guest at one of our previous cheese and beer tasting events. This classic Shropshire style orange-blue cheese is a fine example of his work and consistency. Try it with a bitter beer, a Cabernet Sauvignon, or Eden Orchards cherry juice, and fresh pear slices.

Region: South Canterbury. Type of milk: cow.

BLISS BRIE – FROM LITTLE RIVER ESTATE

A classic brie, nice and soft with hints of mushroom and garlic. Make sure you leave it out of the fridge for 30 to 60 minutes before enjoying, then smear it on slices of baguette. With the nights getting longer, maybe look at a Pinot Noir, a Belgian Tripel, or a pear juice.

Region: Nelson. Type of milk: cow.

LEYDEN VINTAGE – FROM KARIKAAS

We love this classic Dutch style cheese made by the Karikaas team in Canterbury. It’s great for sandwiches, or just nibbling in front of the telly as Autumn rolls on. Try it with your favourite red, a darker beer (a theme this month!) or a Darjeeling tea

Region: Canterbury. Type of milk: cow.
