Welcome to our Cheese box 87 – May 26!
CELEBRATING HOHEPA! If you are a recent subscriber, check out the profile of Hōhepa on our website. Theirs is a wonderful story and the latest chapter is being a finalist in the Mitre 10 NZ Community of the Year category of the 2026 Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year Award. This recognised the collective impact of their inclusive community and the meaningful, everyday work happening at Hōhepa Hawke’s Bay. We are proud to support their mahi by regularly sharing their outstanding cheese with you our Cheese Wheelers.
A CHEESE MADE JUST FOR YOU. THANKS CILANTRO! Huge thanks to Cilantro for being the latest cheesemaker to make a special cheese just for you. The herb goat log in your box is a cheese uniquely created for you this month. Cilantro’s goat cheese logs are in the delicately flavoured and textured zone of the cheesiverse. Suli, Cilantro’s talented cheese maker, has concocted an equally delicate herb mix version, just for you Cheese Wheelers. Enjoy!
LEYDEN VINTAGE – FROM KARIKAAS CHEESE
A classic Dutch style cheese perfect for including in a crusty roll and some Dutch preserved meat. Goes well with a Pinot Noir (which the Dutch make apparently), a Trappist beer, or a Darjeeling tea.
Region: Canterbury. Type of milk: cow
BLACK TRUFFLE BRIE – FROM OVER THE MOON CHEESE
Lovers of earthy soft cheeses will love this one. It’s a very special cheese intended for special occasions. Prior to maturation, each wheel is layered with black truffles giving a rich aromatic nutty-earthy taste. It’s indeed a more cheesy cheese! Match with an Extra Dry or Brut prosecco or a Hops On Pointe from Garage Project.
Region: Waikato. Type of milk: cow
WAIHI BLUE – FROM GERALDINE CHEESE
Crumble this stunning looking blue over salads or vegetables or have it in thick slices in sandwiches, or even in an ethereal toasted sandwich. Match it with a bitter beer, a Riesling or a hot chocolate.
Region: Canterbury. Type of milk: cow
HERBED GOAT LOG – FROM CILANTRO CHEESE
The beauty of being part of The Cheese Wheel is to enjoy cheese that won’t be found anywhere else, like this lovely herbed goat log. This gentle cheese with a lovely texture is ideal to spread on some bread (try a crusty fresh baguette, email us for a recipe!) or add to an egg dish. Enjoy it with a dry Rose, or maybe a saison or a lightly flavoured kombucha.
Region: Waikato. Type of milk: cow
