CHEESE BOX 42 –
DECEMBER 22
Welcome to our Cheese box 42 – December 22!
MERRY CHEESEMAS!
All of us at The Cheese Wheel – Nancy, Mark, Jo, Sarah and Kevin – wish you a Merry Christmas and happy holidays. Thank you so much for supporting us and also for supporting the small but amazing artisans who work so hard to bring us such great cheese. It’s a hard road for most, but a rewarding passion too which us cheese lovers benefit from.
VINTAGE WAIKATO – FROM MERCER CHEESE
This fabulous aged cheese was made on 13 December 2018, so nearly four years ago! It’s expensive for cheesemakers to age cheese because it ties up cash for years, so there aren’t that many cheeses this old available. This gouda-style cheese won a Bronze Medal at the World Cheese Awards in Norway in 2018. Match it with a Pinot Noir, a Porter, or a T2 Pu-Erh Chinese black tea, and your favourite Queen Anne chocolate.
Region: Waikato. Type of milk: cow.
SCAMORZA– FROM WAIRIRI BUFFALO CHEESE
This Italian style semi-soft white cheese is perfect for a classy picnic sandwich or just nibbling of course! Make sure you also pack a Rose, an IPA, or a sparkling water.
Region: Canterbury. Type of milk: buffalo.
OPIKI MA – FROM CARTWHEEL CREAMERY
Named after the small town just south of Palmerston North, this beautiful white goat’s cheese is something of a favourite. It’s a subtle and smooth cheese which makes the most of spring goat milk. Grab a Rose, a Wit bier, or a green tea, and some slices of golden kiwifruit.
Region: Manawatu. Type of milk: goat.
PENINSULA BLUE – FROM BARRY’S BAY CHEESE
Aged for at least three months, this classic blue is very smooth, very creamy, and a touch on the sharp side. Try it with a Riesling, a Doppelbock, or a blackberry mocktail, and a handful of walnuts.
Region: Canterbury. Type of milk: cow.
