Mahoe artisan cheese

Welcome to our Cheese box 62 – June 24!

Montbeliarde Cheese: what a treat!

We are never happier than when we can bring a new style to you. We’re pretty confident in saying that this is the first and only Montbeliarde cheese manufactured in New Zealand. Jake and Jesse Rosevear at Mahoe are famous for being fearless in their experimentation. Creating this fabulous take on this full-flavoured hard cheese with a natural-rinded named after the same breed of cow is a perfect example.

The Montbéliarde is a beautiful brown and white breed to cow from eastern France, the name was first used in 1872, and accepted as a breed in 1889.

Welcome back to the Jones Family!

We are very pleased to feature for the second time a cheese from the Jones Family. Sheep milk products are on the rise. They’re a great alternative for cheese lovers seeking an alternative from bovine milk, and are environmentally friendly too.  We hope you enjoy their gouda!

CLASSIC GOUDA – FROM JONES FAMILY FARM

This is a great example of a sheep milk version of this famous cheese style with a flavour that stays in the mouth. Try it with a Pinot Gris, a fruity kombucha, or a big saison. It also goes great grated on pretty much anything, or in flash sandwiches.

Region: Canterbury. Type of milk: sheep.

MONTBELIARDE – FROM MAHOE FARMHOUSE CHEESE

Montbéliarde is akin to the French Comté, a hard cow’s milk cheese. It’s deliciously sweet and nutty with an interesting texture. It’s a match made in heaven with a stout or porter, an older Chardonnay, or a quality English breakfast tea

Region: Northland. Type of milk: cow.

BRIE – FROM LITTLE RIVER ESTATE

Something of a favourite, this is a classic soft brie with mushroom and garlic tones. Let it warm up for 30 to 60 minutes and enjoy on slices of baguette. With the nights getting longer, maybe look at a Pinot Noir, a Belgian Tripel, or a pear juice.

Region: Nelson-Tasman. Type of milk: A2 cow.

TINUI BLUE – FROM KINGSMEADE CHEESE

This wonderful cheese has won lots of awards. It’s salty and sweet with stunning green and blue veins mould. Try it with a dessert wine, a Belgian Dubbel, or an Oolong tea, and maybe pour some honey over your wedge.

Region: Wairarapa. Type of milk: sheep.
